Allen started his legal career in private practice in Vancouver, BC conducting civil and criminal litigation. He conducted special prosecutions for the Attorney General of British Columbia and was a member of the committee creating a province-wide prosecution service. In 1972, Allen was appointed Regional Crown Counsel in Vancouver responsible for prosecutions for Vancouver, West Vancouver and North Vancouver with a staff of 40 prosecutors.
In 1976, Allen was appointed to the Provincial Court of British Columbia followed by appointments to the County Court of Vancouver Island in 1978 and the Supreme Court of British Columbia in 1990. During his time as a Judge for the Supreme Court of British Columbia, Allen was a member of the Chief Justice Advisory Committee from 1992 to 1995. When the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia was absent, Allen acted as Administrator of British Columbia from 2001 to 2007. Allen retired from the Supreme Court of British Columbia on November 1, 2006.
Allen returned to the practice of law with McConnan Bion O’Connor & Peterson on January 1, 2012, and his primary focus will be in personal injury.
